Tshirt Headband

At the beginning of September, we are flush with new camp tshirts collected over the summer months which often makes last season’s camp shirts redundant or simply out-grown.

So why not recycle those tshirts (or any old tshirt) into a pretty headband (bracelet, bow tie, necklace, pony-tail holder, infinity scarf, etc.)

  • Needle & thread
  • Scissors
  • Elastic banding
  • Jersey tshirt cut into strips

  • For a headband, measure elastic banding around the head, making sure to stretch for a snug fit, cut to size, then sew ends together to make a continuous loop
  • Cut tshirt into strips (1inch by 2.5inches) and tightly knot onto the elastic, making sure to stretch the elastic as you go so that the strips are as close together as possible

This craft can be modified in a myriad of ways:

  • Short elastic loops work great for bracelets and pony-tail holders
  • Longer loops can be bowties, necklaces or infinity scarves
  • Show the elastic, especially if you have a vividly colored elastic band or knot the strips over the entire band so that the elastic is no longer visible
  • Shorten or lengthen the strips to increase the tassel length
  • Mix different fabric patterns – polka dots with stripes or a gradual ombre
